Where and How to Buy Crypto in Hollywood, Florida

Hollywood sits between Miami and Fort Lauderdale with the kiosk density of both and the pricing discipline of neither. Machines here run 12% to 18% all-in — and there is a route that costs 0.2%.

  • Hollywood Boulevard, US-1 and Sheridan Street carry most machines
  • Hard Rock casino traffic keeps cash-conversion demand unusually high
  • Licensed exchanges cost from 0.16% on the order book
  • From 2027: $2,000 daily cap for new kiosk customers statewide

The short answer for Hollywood

Hollywood is the third-largest city in Broward County and one of the more genuinely mixed places in South Florida — a walkable downtown around ArtsPark, seven miles of beach and Broadwalk, an established Caribbean and Latin American residential base, a large retiree population, and the Hard Rock complex on the Seminole reservation pulling in enormous volumes of visitor cash.

That mix produces an unusual crypto market. Kiosk demand is high because cash circulates heavily. But because the city sits on the US-1 corridor between two larger metros, there are enough competing machines that pricing is a shade better than in Miami's cash neighbourhoods. Call it 12% to 18% all-in rather than 14% to 20%.

Better is still not good. This page covers what each route actually costs, where the machines are, and the one Hollywood-specific risk worth talking about openly: the proximity of casino cash to irreversible crypto purchases.

The local map: four layers of access

Hollywood's crypto access breaks along four lines.

The US-1 corridor is the workhorse. Most of the city's machines sit in gas stations and convenience stores along Federal Highway, serving a resident customer base that returns. Competition along this stretch — including from machines a few minutes north in Dania Beach and south in Hallandale — keeps fees from reaching Miami Beach levels.

The beach and downtown serve visitors. Machines exist, they are convenient, and they are priced for people who will not be back.

The suburban west — Sheridan Street, Stirling Road, out towards Pembroke Pines — is app-first territory. Higher incomes, near-universal banking, and mostly supermarket voucher kiosks rather than serious purchase infrastructure.

The Hard Rock area is its own category. Casino complexes generate large amounts of cash moving quickly in both directions, and crypto kiosks nearby capture some of that flow. We flag this without moralising: converting gambling proceeds into an irreversible, volatile asset on impulse, at a 15% markup, in the middle of the night, is a decision that goes badly with unusual reliability. If that describes a pattern you recognise, the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling operates a free 24-hour helpline.

Buying online from a licensed exchange

Licensed, cheap and available from your couch. Three checks.

Licence. The Florida Office of Financial Regulation licenses money transmitters under Chapter 560 of the Florida Statutes; virtual-currency businesses are inside the definition. CEX.IO Corp holds Florida licence FT230000264 and NMLS ID 1804170. Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Crypto.com and Robinhood Crypto hold equivalent Florida authority. Verify on NMLS Consumer Access — it is free and takes two minutes.

Product. Use the order book, not the one-tap buy button. CEX.IO starts at 0.16% maker / 0.25% taker; Gemini ActiveTrader at 0.20%/0.40%; Kraken Pro at 0.25%/0.40%. The buy buttons on the same platforms charge 1% to 4%.

Funding. ACH is free on most licensed venues and settles in one to three business days. Wire clears same-day for a bank fee. Card costs about 3% and is for emergencies.

A note relevant to Hollywood's large retiree population: set up your account while you are healthy and organised, use an authenticator app rather than SMS two-factor, and write down — on paper, in a place someone you trust can find it — enough information for a spouse or executor to access the account. Exchange accounts and self-custody wallets both become genuinely difficult to recover after a death or a cognitive decline if nobody planned for it. This is estate planning, not a crypto problem, but crypto makes it sharper.

Buying with cash: kiosks and vouchers

Hollywood machines run 12% to 18% all-in — the on-screen fee plus the exchange-rate markup. The markup is where most of it hides, so pull up the live spot price on your phone and compare before you confirm.

Because the US-1 corridor carries multiple operators, comparison shopping actually works here in a way it does not in Little Havana or Homestead. Two machines a mile apart can differ by three or four percentage points on the same purchase.

Know your product. Coinstar kiosks inside Hollywood supermarkets running Coinme are vouchers, not ATMs: cash in, printed code out, redeemed in the Coinme app, with an all-in cash exchange fee that Coinme's documentation puts at roughly 15% to 18% depending on location plus a 4% transaction fee.

And check the machine is alive. Bitcoin Depot filed Chapter 11 on 18 May 2026 and switched off roughly 9,700 machines nationally, about 156 in Florida. Broward had a lot of them. Signage remains on walls; the machines do not work.

Surviving operators with Hollywood coverage: CoinFlip (roughly 270 Florida machines, largest network), Byte Federal (headquartered in Venice, Florida), Athena Bitcoin (Miami headquarters), Coinme via Coinstar, RockItCoin.

Hollywood neighbourhood breakdown

Physical crypto access in Hollywood is not evenly spread. Machine density follows cash-heavy retail, not population or income — which means the areas with the most convenient machines are frequently the areas with the worst pricing. Here is how the corridors compare.

Hollywood Boulevard & downtown

ArtsPark and the downtown strip. Moderate kiosk presence, mostly in convenience stores serving evening foot traffic. Priced for visitors more than residents.

US-1 / Federal Highway

The main north–south commercial artery through the city and where most machines actually sit. Enough operators along this stretch that fees are competitive by South Florida standards — worth comparing two machines within a mile.

Sheridan Street & Stirling Road

Suburban east–west corridors with plaza retail and supermarket voucher kiosks. Convenient for residents, mid-range pricing, generally reliable machines.

Hollywood Beach & Broadwalk

Tourist territory. A few machines priced accordingly. If you live here, walk inland.

Hard Rock / Seminole reservation area

High cash turnover from casino traffic, and correspondingly high kiosk demand. This is the highest-risk area in the city for people converting gambling winnings or losses into crypto on impulse — a genuinely bad combination.

Dania Beach border & Griffin Road

Light industrial and marine-adjacent. Sparse machines, but this is where the Fort Lauderdale marine economy bleeds south, and where stablecoin invoice settlement turns up in boatyards and refit shops.

What each route actually costs

The table below prices the same $1,000 bitcoin purchase through every route available in Hollywood, using published fee schedules as at August 2026. The numbers include both the stated fee and a realistic allowance for exchange-rate markup, which is where most of the cost hides.

Cost of buying $1,000 of bitcoin in Hollywood, by method
Method All-in cost on $1,000 How fast
Licensed exchange, ACH + limit order $2–$6 1–3 business days
Licensed exchange, debit card $25–$40 Minutes
US-1 cash kiosk in Hollywood $120–$180 Under 10 minutes

Costs are our own modelling from published operator schedules plus observed exchange-rate markups; your machine may differ. Always read the on-screen quote before confirming.

What we see people get wrong

Two things we see in Hollywood more than elsewhere in Broward.

The first is estate and inheritance gaps. Hollywood has a substantial older population, and we regularly hear from families who know a relative held crypto but cannot access it. There is no customer service line for a self-custody wallet and no probate process that can recover a lost recovery phrase. The fix is unglamorous and works: document what exists and where the keys are, in writing, with your other estate documents. Do not include the actual recovery phrase in a will, which becomes a public record — reference its location instead.

The second is impulse conversion near the casino. Volatile assets and gambling psychology reinforce each other badly, and a kiosk that takes cash at 3am at a 16% markup is designed to catch exactly that impulse. If you find yourself buying crypto with money you brought to gamble with, or to recover a loss, treat that as the signal it is. The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling runs a free, confidential 24-hour helpline.

The third, more mundane: Hollywood residents frequently buy at a kiosk once "to try it", then never move the crypto off whatever wallet the machine suggested. If you do not hold the recovery phrase, you do not hold the asset. Move it to a wallet you control the same week.

The single biggest cost most people in Florida pay is not a bad trade — it is using the convenient door instead of the cheap one, over and over, for years. A kiosk habit at 15% on $300 a month is roughly $540 a year handed to an operator for a service that a licensed exchange performs for about a dollar.

Why crypto took hold in Hollywood

Hollywood's economy runs on tourism and hospitality, healthcare — Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest employers in Broward — retail, marine services along the Dania Beach border, and the enormous economic footprint of the Seminole Tribe's Hard Rock complex.

The city has been gentrifying steadily around downtown and the beach while retaining large working-class neighbourhoods to the west and north. That produces the mixed crypto profile described above: real cash-conversion demand alongside a growing population of app-first buyers.

Florida's constitutional prohibition on a state income tax means no state capital gains tax on crypto, here as everywhere in Florida. For Hollywood's substantial retiree population, that combines with the absence of a state estate tax to make Florida a genuinely favourable place to hold appreciating assets long-term. Federal tax still applies in full — the IRS treats digital assets as property — and beneficiaries generally receive a stepped-up basis at death, which is worth discussing with a Florida estate attorney if your holdings are meaningful.

Fraud, kiosks and the 2027 rules

Broward County is consistently among the top Florida counties for crypto kiosk fraud losses, and Hollywood's demographics put it squarely in the target zone.

The dominant scam is impersonation: a caller claiming to be a bank fraud department, a utility, Medicare, the IRS, a grandchild in trouble, or a sheriff's deputy with a warrant. Urgency, secrecy, and instructions to deposit cash at a named machine while staying on the line. FBI IC3 recorded 1,213 Florida kiosk complaints in 2025 with $32.8 million in adjusted losses, heavily skewed towards victims over sixty.

The second is romance-to-investment fraud, which the Florida Attorney General's Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit has targeted directly — including a $5.4 million recovery announced in April 2026 alongside the Marion County Sheriff's Office. The pattern: a months-long online relationship, then an introduction to a trading platform that shows fake profits and cannot process withdrawals.

From 1 January 2027, Florida's Virtual Currency Kiosk Act requires pre-transaction fraud warnings, receipts showing transaction hash and destination wallet, daily caps of $2,000 for new customers and $10,000 thereafter, and a right to a full refund within 72 hours for a first-transaction fraud victim who reports to the operator and law enforcement within 60 days with documentation.

Report to FBI IC3 and the Florida Attorney General.

Before you insert cash into any Florida kiosk

  • Nobody legitimate — no bank, agency, utility or court — will ever ask you to pay at a crypto kiosk.
  • If someone is on the phone with you while you do it, it is a scam. Hang up.
  • Read the on-screen fee and compare the quoted rate to the live spot price.
  • Send to a wallet you control, never to an address someone else gave you.
  • Keep the receipt: from 2027 it must show the transaction hash, wallet address, fees and refund policy.
  • Report fraud within 60 days to the operator and law enforcement to preserve your refund right.

Hollywood is a comparatively good place to buy crypto with cash, in the narrow sense that competition along US-1 keeps kiosk fees below Miami's. But "comparatively good" still means paying $150 for something that costs $4 online.

Open an account with a licensed exchange, use free ACH, place limit orders, move long-term holdings to a hardware wallet — and if you are over sixty or have family who are, write down where the keys live.

Hollywood crypto questions people actually ask

Where can I buy bitcoin with cash in Hollywood, FL?

Kiosks along US-1 (Federal Highway), Hollywood Boulevard, Sheridan Street and Stirling Road, plus supermarket voucher machines. Expect 12% to 18% all-in. Because several operators compete along US-1, comparing two nearby machines can save three or four percentage points.

Is Hollywood cheaper than Miami for crypto kiosks?

Slightly, yes — typically 12% to 18% versus Miami's 14% to 20%, because the US-1 corridor carries more competing operators. Both are far more expensive than a licensed exchange at under 0.3%.

What happens to my crypto when I die?

If it is on an exchange, your executor can usually claim it with a death certificate and probate documents. If it is in self-custody and nobody has the recovery phrase, it is permanently lost. Document what you hold and where the keys are, alongside your estate papers — but never write the recovery phrase into a will, which becomes public record.

Can I buy crypto near the Hard Rock in Hollywood?

There are machines in the surrounding area serving casino traffic. We would gently suggest that converting gambling money into a volatile asset at a 16% markup is a decision worth sleeping on. The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling runs a free 24-hour helpline.

Which exchanges are licensed to serve Hollywood, Florida?

All the US majors: CEX.IO (Florida licence FT230000264), Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Crypto.com, Robinhood Crypto, Bitstamp, Cash App, eToro and Uphold. Licensing is statewide. Compare them on our exchange rankings.

Do Hollywood retirees pay Florida tax on crypto gains?

No. Florida has no personal income tax and no state estate tax. Federal capital gains tax applies, and heirs generally receive a stepped-up basis at death. Talk to a Florida estate attorney if your holdings are significant.
