Hillsborough County at a glance
Hillsborough County gets left out of the conversation about Florida crypto, which is a mistake. Miami has the conferences and the marketing. Tampa has a working technology and financial-services economy — banking operations centres, cybersecurity firms, insurance technology, a growing fintech cluster around Water Street — and that produces a quieter and in some ways more substantial market.
It also produces better prices. Kiosks here run 11% to 17% all-in versus Miami-Dade's 14% to 22%, largely because the Dale Mabry corridor carries enough competing operators that no single machine can charge whatever it likes.
This page covers the county. Our Tampa city guide and Tampa kiosk guide go corridor by corridor.
The economy behind the crypto market
Hillsborough's economy is genuinely diversified in a way most of Florida's is not: financial services and bank operations centres, healthcare and the USF medical complex, cybersecurity and defence work linked to MacDill Air Force Base and US Central Command, insurance, logistics through Port Tampa Bay, professional services, and a fast-growing technology sector around the Water Street development.
That matters for crypto twice over. It creates real employment — blockchain engineering, compliance, security and product roles at firms that pay salaries — and it creates a population with the financial literacy to use order books instead of buy buttons. Tampa's crypto community is smaller and quieter than Miami's, and considerably more likely to be made up of people who do this for a living.
The county also has a large hourly-paid service and logistics workforce concentrated in East Tampa, Brandon and the Port district, and it is that population the cash-corridor kiosks are priced for.
Florida's constitutional prohibition on a personal income tax applies here as everywhere: no state capital gains tax, no state tax on crypto received as income, no state estate tax. Combined with a cost of living well below South Florida's, that is a substantial part of why technology workers have been relocating to Tampa Bay.
How access is distributed
Four layers, mapping neatly onto the county's geography.
The downtown and Westshore corridor is where the industry actually is — fintech firms, bank operations centres, cybersecurity companies and the professional-services layer around them. Very few kiosks. This is also where Hillsborough's crypto employment market lives, which is a genuine one unlike most Florida counties.
The cash corridors — Nebraska Avenue, Florida Avenue, parts of East Tampa and Sulphur Springs — carry the highest kiosk density and the highest fees, following the same pattern as every US city: machines cluster where people already pay percentages to access their own money.
The Dale Mabry spine runs the length of the county through Carrollwood, Town 'N' Country and out towards Northdale, serving a broad middle-income population, with enough competing operators that pricing is genuinely better than the cash corridors.
The university belt around USF and Fowler Avenue is its own market: high curiosity, low experience, and every marketing dollar in the industry aimed squarely at it.
Corridor by corridor
Kiosk pricing in Florida is a function of local competition rather than local cost. The same machine model charges 11% on one road and 20% on another twenty minutes away. Here is how Hillsborough County's corridors compare.
Downtown, Water Street & the Channel District
Tampa's newest business core and the highest concentration of fintech and crypto-adjacent employers in the region. Very few kiosks — this is a card-and-app population — but where the professional meetups happen.
Dale Mabry Highway
The county's best kiosk corridor. Multiple operators compete from Kennedy Boulevard up through Carrollwood, which keeps all-in costs at the bottom of the local range at 11–15%.
Nebraska Avenue & Florida Avenue
Older commercial corridors with a heavily cash-based customer base and correspondingly high fees. Also a common destination in impersonation-scam cases.
Ybor City & East Tampa
Historic district turned nightlife quarter, with machines in convenience stores serving evening traffic at closer to visitor rates. East Tampa beyond it is more cash-oriented and pricier.
USF & Fowler Avenue
Roughly 50,000 students. Several kiosks serving student traffic, and the largest concentration of first-time crypto buyers in the Bay area.
Brandon, Riverview & the eastern suburbs
Fast-growing suburban Hillsborough. Supermarket voucher kiosks plus a handful of true machines along US-301 and Brandon Boulevard. Mid-range pricing.
Westshore & the airport district
Corporate offices, banks and business hotels. Sparse kiosks. Where Tampa's financial-services employers sit and where corporate treasury questions come from.
Hyde Park, SoHo & Davis Islands
Affluent, walkable, app-first. Essentially no kiosk demand, and where a good deal of the county's larger private holdings actually sit.
Kiosks: operators and real fees
Tampa Bay has several hundred crypto kiosks across Hillsborough and Pinellas. Two things matter before you use one.
The fee is two numbers. The on-screen percentage in Hillsborough typically runs 8% to 13%, plus an exchange-rate markup of 3% to 6% inside the quote. Together that is the 11% to 17% all-in range. Open the live price on your phone and compare before confirming.
The network shrank in 2026. Bitcoin Depot filed Chapter 11 on 18 May 2026 and pulled roughly 9,700 machines offline nationally, about 156 in Florida with a meaningful concentration in Tampa Bay convenience stores. Signage has not all come down.
Operators still active: CoinFlip (roughly 270 Florida machines, the largest surviving network), Byte Federal (headquartered down the Gulf coast in Venice, Florida), Coinme via Coinstar — a voucher product with an all-in cash exchange fee of roughly 15% to 18% per Coinme's own documentation — Athena Bitcoin, and RockItCoin.
Licensed exchanges serving Hillsborough County
Licensing in Florida is statewide, not county-level. Every platform below holds Florida money transmitter authority under Chapter 560 of the Florida Statutes and serves Hillsborough County residents identically to anywhere else in the state.

Fraud and the 2027 rules
Hillsborough sees the full range of Florida crypto fraud.
Impersonation kiosk fraud is the highest-volume category, with victims typically directed to machines on Nebraska Avenue, Florida Avenue or in East Tampa. FBI IC3 data cited in Florida's 2026 legislative record recorded 1,213 kiosk complaints statewide in 2025 with $32.8 million in adjusted losses.
Romance-to-investment fraud is the costliest by dollar value. The Florida Attorney General's Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit announced a $5.4 million recovery from this pattern in April 2026.
Student-targeted schemes concentrate around USF: fake internships requiring a crypto payment, money-mule recruitment framed as a paid remote gig — which is money laundering, and the courier is who gets prosecuted — and Discord groups promoting tokens the promoters already hold.
Compensation-related confusion is a distinctively Hillsborough problem. Tampa's fintech sector means a meaningful number of people receive part of their pay in digital assets. Crypto received as compensation is ordinary income at fair market value on the day received, and selling later is a separate capital event. Getting that wrong compounds every year.
From 1 January 2027, HB 505 adds mandatory kiosk fraud warnings, receipts showing the transaction hash and wallet addresses, daily caps of $2,000 for new customers and $10,000 thereafter, and a first-transaction refund right within 72 hours.
Before anyone in your family uses a Florida kiosk
- No bank, agency, utility, court or law enforcement body ever accepts payment at a crypto kiosk.
- Urgency plus secrecy is a theft in progress. Hanging up costs nothing.
- Never scan a QR code or wallet address supplied by someone else.
- Keep the receipt — from 2027 it must show the transaction hash, wallet addresses and all fees.
- Report fraud within 60 days to the operator and law enforcement to preserve the refund right.
Hillsborough is one of the easier Florida counties to do this well in. Open an account with a Florida-licensed exchange, fund it with free ACH, place limit orders, and move long-term holdings to a hardware wallet with a waterproof backup — Gulf-coast storm surge is a real consideration for paper.
If you work in the local technology or fintech sector and any part of your compensation arrives in crypto, get a CPA who has handled it before. That is where the real money is at stake, not in a kiosk fee.

Hillsborough County crypto questions
Are Tampa crypto ATM fees cheaper than Miami?
Yes, modestly — typically 11% to 17% all-in versus Miami-Dade's 14% to 22%. The Dale Mabry Highway corridor carries enough competing operators to hold prices down. Nebraska Avenue and East Tampa machines sit at the top of the local range.
Are there crypto jobs in Hillsborough County?
Yes, and more than most people expect. Tampa's financial-services operations centres, cybersecurity firms and the fintech cluster around Water Street hire for blockchain engineering, compliance, security and product roles. It is one of the few Florida counties with a genuine crypto employment market.
I get paid partly in crypto by a Tampa employer. How is that taxed?
As ordinary income at the fair market value in dollars on the day you receive it, subject to federal income tax plus payroll or self-employment tax. Selling later is a separate capital gain or loss measured from that same value. Florida charges no state income tax. If token vesting is involved, use a CPA who has done it before.
Where are the crypto ATMs in Hillsborough County?
Best pricing along Dale Mabry Highway. Additional density on Nebraska Avenue, Florida Avenue, in East Tampa, around USF and Fowler Avenue, and through Brandon and Riverview. Downtown, Hyde Park and Davis Islands have almost none.
Is there an OTC desk in Tampa Bay?
Tampa Bay clients are generally served by South Florida desks and by private-client services attached to larger operators, with minimums typically from $25,000. Above roughly $100,000 per order a desk usually beats a retail market order once slippage is counted.
Do Hillsborough residents pay state tax on crypto?
No. Florida has no personal income tax, so no state capital gains tax and no state tax on crypto received as income. Federal tax applies in full. See our tax guide.
