Marion County at a glance
Marion County has around 400,000 residents and is simultaneously one of the world's most important thoroughbred breeding regions, a major logistics hub along I-75, and home to an enormous and growing retirement population spilling north from The Villages.
It is also the site of Florida's largest single crypto fraud recovery. In April 2026 the Florida Attorney General's office and the Marion County Sheriff's Office announced the recovery of $5.4 million in stolen digital assets from a romance-turned-investment scheme that had primarily targeted older Floridians — described at the time as the largest statewide recovery of its kind.
That case is why this page devotes so much space to fraud. Marion County's investigators have become genuinely capable at tracing cryptocurrency, which is a good thing and also an indication of how much of it they have had to do.
The economy behind the crypto market
Marion County's economy has three pillars. Thoroughbred breeding and equestrian sport, which makes Ocala one of the most important horse regions in the world and supports an enormous veterinary, feed, transport and sales infrastructure. Logistics and distribution along the I-75 corridor, which has grown rapidly. And healthcare and services for a very large and expanding retirement population.
Median household income sits below the state average, and the age profile skews significantly older — both facts that make the fee gap and the fraud risk on this page consequential rather than academic. A substantial share of household income across the county is fixed: Social Security, pensions and annuities.
Florida's constitutional prohibition on a personal income tax means no state capital gains tax and no state estate tax. Federally, long-term gains are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on income, and heirs generally receive a stepped-up basis at death — worth structuring properly with a Florida estate attorney if you hold appreciated assets.
How access is distributed
Four distinct layers.
The Ocala commercial corridors. Silver Springs Boulevard, Pine Avenue, US-27 and the State Road 200 retail strip carry essentially all the kiosk coverage at 12% to 18% all-in, with enough operators along SR-40 and SR-200 to keep pricing mid-range rather than extreme.
The retirement belt. Southern Marion County, Marion Oaks, and the fringe of The Villages. Very thin local machine coverage and very high fraud exposure. This is where the scam calls land, and the callers supply driving directions.
The logistics corridor. Distribution centres along I-75 employ a substantial hourly workforce on rotating shifts, served by round-the-clock machines at fuel stops.
Horse country. The farms north-west of the city are a genuinely unusual layer. Thoroughbred sales run into six and seven figures with international buyers, and crypto has come up periodically — usually with the same answer as high-end real estate: the transaction settles in dollars because registries, insurers and escrow agents require it, but a buyer may liquidate crypto to fund it. Which is a taxable disposal worth planning before the hammer falls.
Corridor by corridor
Kiosk pricing in Florida is a function of local competition rather than local cost. The same machine model charges 11% on one road and 20% on another twenty minutes away. Here is how Marion County's corridors compare.
Silver Springs Boulevard (SR-40)
The main east–west artery through Ocala and the densest kiosk stretch in the county, across a long commercial run.
Pine Avenue (US-441) & US-27
North–south commercial corridors. Good coverage plus supermarket voucher kiosks. Mid-range fees, long hours.
State Road 200 retail corridor
The busiest shopping strip in Marion County, serving the western suburbs and the retirement communities beyond. Solid coverage and voucher machines.
Downtown Ocala & the square
Restored historic downtown with restaurants and independent retail. Very few machines; a walkable district with a growing small-business scene.
The Villages fringe & Marion Oaks
Southern Marion County running towards one of the largest retirement communities in the world. Thin local machine coverage but very high telephone-fraud exposure.
Horse farms & the north-west
World-class thoroughbred country. Almost no retail crypto activity, but a notable local phenomenon: high-value equine transactions where crypto occasionally comes up as a funding method.
I-75 & the logistics belt
Distribution centres employing a substantial hourly workforce on rotating shifts, served by round-the-clock machines at fuel stops.
Dunnellon & the western county
Sparse rural population. Effectively online-only; the nearest machines are in Ocala.
Kiosks: operators and real fees
Marion County kiosks run 12% to 18% all-in. The Silver Springs Boulevard and State Road 200 corridors are the most competitive; machines in smaller commercial areas price higher.
Read both numbers: the on-screen percentage, and the machine's quoted exchange rate against the live spot price on your phone.
Coinstar machines running Coinme inside county supermarkets are voucher products, not ATMs, at an all-in cash exchange fee of roughly 15% to 18% depending on location per Coinme's documentation plus a 4% transaction fee.
Bitcoin Depot filed Chapter 11 on 18 May 2026 and shut roughly 9,700 machines nationally, about 156 in Florida. North-central Florida stores still display old branding. Operators still active: CoinFlip, Byte Federal (headquartered in Venice), Coinme via Coinstar, Athena Bitcoin, RockItCoin.

Fraud and the 2027 rules
Marion County's risk hierarchy is informed by what local law enforcement has actually prosecuted.
Romance-to-investment fraud is the dominant threat by dollar value and the subject of the April 2026 recovery. The pattern: contact through a dating app, social platform or a "wrong number" text. A relationship builds over weeks with no request for money — which is what makes it effective. Then an investment platform is introduced. A small deposit shows a profit and a small withdrawal succeeds, establishing trust. A much larger deposit follows, often funded by liquidating retirement savings or home equity. Then withdrawals require a tax, a fee, a compliance hold, an additional deposit. There is no money and never was.
The Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit reported recovering $3.3 million in the first fiscal quarter of 2026 and $7.2 million in total since its founding roughly two and a half years earlier. Recovery is possible but rare and partial — and dramatically more likely if you report early.
Impersonation kiosk fraud. FBI IC3 recorded 1,213 Florida kiosk complaints in 2025 with $32.8 million in adjusted losses.
Recovery scams. A second theft aimed at people already robbed, offering retrieval for an upfront fee. Genuine recovery happens through law enforcement and never requires advance payment.
From 1 January 2027, HB 505 adds mandatory kiosk warnings, receipts, daily caps of $2,000 and $10,000, and a first-transaction refund right within 72 hours.
Before anyone in your family uses a Florida kiosk
- No bank, agency, utility, court or law enforcement body ever accepts payment at a crypto kiosk.
- Urgency plus secrecy is a theft in progress. Hanging up costs nothing.
- Never scan a QR code or wallet address supplied by someone else.
- Keep the receipt — from 2027 it must show the transaction hash, wallet addresses and all fees.
- Report fraud within 60 days to the operator and law enforcement to preserve the refund right.
If you want to own crypto in Marion County, the mechanics are easy: a Florida-licensed exchange, free ACH, a limit order, and a hardware wallet for anything long-term. Turn on withdrawal allow-listing and disable margin while you are in the settings.
The genuinely important part of this page is the fraud section. Marion County has lost a great deal of money to romance-investment schemes, and the reason local investigators are now good at tracing crypto is that they have had far too much practice. If you have an older relative here, the conversation worth having is not about blockchain. It is: nobody you meet online gets to advise you about money, and any withdrawal that requires a payment first is a theft.

Marion County crypto questions
What was the $5.4 million Marion County crypto recovery?
In April 2026 the Florida Attorney General's office and the Marion County Sheriff's Office announced the recovery of $5.4 million in stolen digital assets from a romance-turned-investment scheme that primarily targeted older Floridians — described at the time as the largest statewide recovery of its kind.
How does a romance-investment crypto scam work?
Contact through a dating app, social platform or a "wrong number" text. A relationship builds over weeks with no request for money. Then an investment platform is introduced. A small deposit shows a profit and a small withdrawal succeeds, establishing trust. A much larger deposit follows. Then withdrawals require a tax, fee or additional deposit — because there is no money. Report early; recovery odds fall fast.
Can stolen crypto be recovered in Florida?
Sometimes, partially, through law enforcement — the Florida Attorney General's Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit reported $7.2 million recovered since its founding. Report immediately to FBI IC3, the Florida Attorney General and your local sheriff. Never pay anyone who offers to recover funds for an upfront fee — that is a second scam.
Where are the crypto ATMs in Marion County?
Mainly along Silver Springs Boulevard (SR-40), Pine Avenue (US-441), US-27 and the State Road 200 retail corridor, plus supermarket voucher machines. Expect 12% to 18% all-in.
Can I buy a racehorse with cryptocurrency in Ocala?
In practice, high-value equine transactions settle in dollars because registries, insurers and escrow agents require it — much like real estate. A buyer may liquidate crypto to fund the purchase, which is a taxable disposal and worth planning before the sale rather than after.
Do Marion County residents pay state tax on crypto?
No. Florida has no personal income tax and no state estate tax. Federal capital gains tax applies, and heirs generally receive a stepped-up basis at death.
